Rydia

Age: 7
Class: Summoner
Height: 4'1"
Weight: 84 lbs

About (No Spoilers)

Rydia is a summoner and as a young girl, Kain and Cecil accidentally destroy her hometown and she hated Cecil and Kain for what they did.  Eventually, Cecil helps her heal her wounds after she summons Titan after Cecil and Kain and she joins Cecil and his cause during the course of the game.  Rydia is a summoner, meaning she can casts such major summon monsters like Shiva, Ifrit, Bahamut, etc.  She is a weak character throughout most of the game, defence-wise.

Major Relations

Rydia has a strong connection with the Mist Dragon, who was slain on Kain’s and Cecil’s initial journey to the Mist Valley.  It is apparent that Rydia has no parents and that the Mist Dragon was Rydia’s adopted mother as she cared for her.  The Mist Dragon was summoned by Rydia's mother and when the Dragon died, so did her mother.  Also, later on, Rydia gets caught in a storm at sea and King Leviathian then brings her to the Land of the Summons.  From there, she makes some summon friends and she grows up there as well.  From here, it is likely that Edge, the Ninja Prince of Ebland has an obsession over Rydia and draws interest to her.  Besides this, Rydia doesn’t really have strong relations with anyone else during the course of the game.

Character Developments (Spoilers)

As a young girl, Rydia’s hometown gets burned down by accident by Kain and Cecil and fearing for her safety, she summons Titan after Cecil and Kain but she gets injured shortly afterwards.  Cecil offers to help Rydia heal her wounds but she still can’t forgive Cecil for what he has done to her hometown.  Over time, Rydia learns to accept Cecil’s company and joins him on his cause and eventually, she learns the art of summoning from King Leviathian in the Land of Summons and she later on grows up there as well.  From here, Rydia becomes an essential part of your party as she is the only character that can use both Black Magic and Summon Magic as well.  Her personality doesn’t change too much throughout the game however.

Review

Rydia is a weak character at the beginning of FFIV and throughout most of the game but she is still a useful character as she can later on cast deadly Black Magic as well as summon monsters like Ifrit, Leviathian, Bahamut, etc.  While weak in terms of physical defense, Rydia’s summoning abilities can come in handy against large groups of difficult enemies.  She doesn’t really have any special commands to note other than her Black/White Magic and Summon commands.  I think Rydia is an alright character, I personally don’t like her too much as she is horribly weak in the beginning but her ordeal is quite interesting once you get through and good portion of the game.  Of course, Rydia may be one of those underrated characters to others but she’s merely a mediocre character in my view, it’s up to you though.

Weapons/Armor/Accessories

Unlike Kain or Cecil, Rydia can’t equip heavy and powerful armor and she can equip lighter armor instead.  While this of course makes Rydia’s physical defense weak, her magic defense is normally fairly high compared to the others so it’s good and bad in certain ways and situations.  Rydia can equip and use a good variety of weapons, she can use:  Rods, whips and sticks alike.  While they aren’t nearly as strong as swords and spears, they aren’t really a focal point of Rydia’s offense as she is more magic-oriented but unfortunately, you have to live with the fact that Rydia doesn’t have a very accurate hit percentage and is very weak throughout most of the game.
