Kain Highwind

Age: 21
Class: Dragoon
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 184 lbs

About (No Spoilers)

Kain is Cecil’s most loyal and best friend and throughout the game, Kain thrives to become a true Dragoon Knight, just like his father was.  He also has a secret love for Rosa and is in charge of the Dragoon Knights in the Kingdom of Baron.  Kain is constantly under the control of an evil force as he struggles with his curse.  Nevertheless, Kain is willing to follow and back Cecil up no matter what happens to him.

Major Relations

Kain is of course Cecil’s most trusted and loyal friend and he is willing to back Cecil up and he also supports his views and opinions too.  Kain also knows the people in Baron Castle fairly well and throughout the game, it appears that he is the lone Dragoon Knight with a cause.  Kain pretty much shares similar relations with Rosa throughout the game but it appears that Kain only shares a secret interest in her, while Cecil appears to have a definite friendship with Rosa on the other hand.  There is very little mention of Kain’s father on the other hand though.

Character Developments (Spoilers)

Kain’s character doesn’t really undergo too many changes and remains pretty much the same throughout the course of the game.  Kain is a Dragoon Knight in training who one day dreams of becoming a true Dragoon Knight just like his father was and he remains one of Cecil’s most true and loyal friends.  However, Kain is at the source of FFIV’s most biggest plot twists as since he is constantly under the control of Golbez, who is the leader of the Red Wings after Cecil’s dismissal by King Baron, he has betrayed Cecil and his friends several times throughout the game.  Also, another interesting fact about Kain is that he secretly shares Cecil’s love for Rosa and the three have good relations to each other.  But still, Kain is a good friend and a useful member of Cecil’s party during the course of FFIV.  Like Cecil, Kain hopes to restore peace to the world.

Review

Kain’s special battle command is the “Jump” command.  It is quite effective for the most part and while it takes a few turns, Kain’s Jump is quite powerful and can be at least 2X more powerful than Kain’s regular attack in most cases.  It’s especially helpful during several boss battles but it’s not always wise to use the Jump in every situation though.  While Kain’s character isn’t nearly as deep as Cecil’s, Square still managed to keep him part of the main plot and Kain plays an important role in the story.  Kain still remains a popular and well-liked character among many RPG veteran gamers and he is still considered the best Dragoon Knight ever made in any FF game.  In fact, in FF9, there’s even one weapon named after him!  To me, Kain isn’t my favorite character but he’s still good in my view however, his personality may be too similar to Cecil but his attacks and weapons are cool though.
